Why It Is Better to Specialize in Everything You Do

Do you think it is better to be a generalist, or a specialist in your business? Common knowledge tells us to focus on one type of skill and to do it well:

Most business people seek to succeed in their business, yet not everyone becomes successful. There is no single reason for failure of a business, but a common factor is often lack of focus in the business operations.

Every business owner is faced with a multitude of options to choose from:

  • which products to produce and export
  • which marketing method to use
  • which customer base to target
  • which market territory to explore

Many people try to sell too many products and services to everyone, everywhere, and in every possible case. As a result, they often weaken their efforts by spreading themselves too thin. The problem with such plans can be summed up in the old adage: "A jack of all trades is a master of none".

To succeed in any business, a person must become a specialist that people would seek in order to obtain a product or service that is of value. In fact, not only do top professionals concentrate on their chosen vocation, they even specialize within the field itself. For example, within the medical field there are surgeons, pediatricians, and, optometrists, and within the legal field there are corporate lawyers, civil lawyers, and family lawyers.

The decision to become professional in your business is an active choice that the business owner can make. One essential tool to support the success of a business is the presence of a detailed business plan. Simply said, a business plan is a blueprint or a road map that outlines exactly how to operate the business. A good business plan must answer several questions:

  • what industry to target
  • what products to make
  • who is the target customer base
  • how to market the product to the end user

As an entrepreneur, you must have a clear and specific answer to each of these questions. Only then you would be able to specialize within your business and become a master of your trade.

It is by confining yourself to one type of product, a single marketing method to target group of prospects within one geographical area, that you would be able to concentrate your efforts and perfect your technique. This way you would develop your strength within a niche market that you would be able to become an expert in your chosen field using you method of selling of your product, and within your target market. Moreover, from a financial perspective, it is also more productive to concentrate your limited resources in the tools that you are able to support in order to realize success.

It is only after you master your business practice within a specific area, that you would able to successfully expand into other areas. Expanding too early before achieving your initial success may only compound your problems further.

Thus, to become a master in your business, you must focus, concentrate and specialize in everything you do.
