Newly approved government procurement strategy bodes well for SMEs

The policy, adopted on 7 November 2008 and expected to be fully implemented in the 2008/2009 fiscal year, will require both national and provincial departments to spend 85% of their budgets for specific goods and services in the small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME) sector. The cabinet also resolved that all government departments would immediately implement a 30-day payment rule for goods and services procured from SMMEs

The procurement strategy covers 10 categories of products:
– advertising, media and communication– interior and exterior services and cleaning product supplies
– interior and exterior furniture and décor– clothing and textiles
– computer equipment and consumable supplies– events coordination and management
– maintenance, repairs, construction and office space– travel coordination and shuttle services
– food perishables and supplies– stationery supplies and printing
