Newly approved government procurement strategy bodes well for SMEs

Provided by Business Partners Ltd, South Africa's leading investor in SMEs
The policy, adopted on 7 November 2008 and expected to be fully implemented in the 2008/2009 fiscal year, will require both national and provincial departments to spend 85% of their budgets for specific goods and services in the small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME) sector. The cabinet also resolved that all government departments would immediately implement a 30-day payment rule for goods and services procured from SMMEs

The procurement strategy covers 10 categories of products:

–   advertising, media and communication

–   interior and exterior services and cleaning product supplies

–   interior and exterior furniture and décor

–   clothing and textiles

–   computer equipment and consumable supplies

–   events coordination and management

–   maintenance, repairs, construction and office space

–   travel coordination and shuttle services

–   food perishables and supplies

–   stationery supplies and printing
